Running East

…sometime I will add a post about how the idea of running across the country started rattling around in my head. And a post about others who have done it. And maybe a post about how stupid it is to do it, especially when there are so many other things to do and when your true love is trail running, not road running. Much less on interstates.

Not now though…

So, I am on some kind of new adventure. The start came rather abruptly on April 5th when I found myself running away from the wet sand in Seaside, Oregon.

Seaside, OR – April 5th.

The goal is simply to run as far east as I can and maybe raise a little money while I am at it for cancer research. The two requirements for me are that it is safe and fun. If not, I will stop the run.

But, so far so good. As I write this, I’m six days in and have covered 160 miles. Each day has been filled with adventure: getting lost on logging roads, hailed on, yelled at, pulled over (twice) by police, scenic abandoned roadways on Oregon 30, and miles running against traffic on I-84 through the Columbia Gorge. And this is just the beginning.

I’ll do my best to add more frequent updates here as I go along. Please check out the new tab on this site ‘Transcon Run‘ – it has more details of the run but is also a work in progress.

For now, I’m keeping my eye on short term goals. Pendleton, the Idaho Border, Boise. Then we will see. One step at a time after all.

  • You asked permission to shoot that cop, right?

  • Hi xyloph – I definitely asked him…he was super nice about everything. Thanks for reading and asking..

  • This is great. Picture of campsite 2 cracked me up. Two stops by the police cracked me up. Envious of your adventure. Maybe someday I’ll be so bold as to rearrange things in such manner. Happy to follow vicariously for now.

  • Great pics…you’re an inspiration. I gotta admit I’m a bit jealous though…had a bum knee for over 2 weeks already and I’m feeling like a potato.

Feedback welcome
