Happy New Year!

Yesterday was the Nepalese New Year! Welcome to 2068! I just took a walk to Gorak Shep and had a lovely climb up Kalapathar – a ‘little’ hill that is nearby. Tandra and I went up it last fall, reaching the top just as dawn broke. It was one of the most incredible mornings of

Pheriche Respite – Island Peak Recap

Pheriche Respite – Island Peak Recap

Made the ~7hr walk down to Pheriche at ~14,000ft yesterday. A head-wind and snow (none on the ground) in my face the whole way. Met some interesting people at the HRA High Altitude Medical Post yesterday and have enjoyed being able to reliably get online. But the night was actually colder than base camp 3,500ft

Safe at Camp II!

Safe at Camp II!

Hello SWEETFCers, Kelly here with an update from Seth: he made it across the ice fall to Camp I, then continued straight on up to Camp II where he is now resting in his tent.  He said the trip up was really difficult – he likened it to a 50 mile run (which on the

Heading to Pheriche? Getting High(er)?

Heading to Pheriche? Getting High(er)?

Just about one week at base camp and I’m actually making plans to head south for a few days to Pheriche to visit the high altitude medicine clinic there and see if they might administer a few of my porter health surveys. This is basically a 15 minute survey that we are administering to porters

Settling in at Base Camp

Settling in at Base Camp

Hi all, I’m keeping this short and then will (maybe) come back and edit more as most of my internet connections to date have been lousy with updates lost to the netherworlds. I’m not sure how fast the email report goes out for those millions who have subscribed – but consider visiting the actual web

Seattle - Tacoma Airport 170lbs of gear!

Onwards to Everest?

Not sure where to start…Right now I am in Namche Bazaar which is around 11,200ft and is basically the last stop for ‘modern’ conveniences – before trekkers and climbers head deeper into the Khumbu. I was here last September when my friends Alex and Tandra and I did some trekking and climbing. That trip planted a

Gorges Waterfall 50k

Had a great run with Kelly and friends at the Gorges Waterfall 50k. This was another nice race by James Varner from Rainshadow Running. There really were too many waterfalls to count! Full pics are on picasa but a few are below. I’m sorry to miss the Yakima 50k next month but I know Rich,

Dominican Republic – Family Reunion

Sitting in the Seoul airport 3/16 with some time to kill and thought I would finally try to do a little write-up about the trip to the DR that Kelly and I made a couple weeks ago. I’m going to fudge the date on this post so it matches the DR trip end (2/26) and

James kicking Kelly's ass (again)

Orcas Island 50k

Ran this super fun, super tough 50k with Kelly this weekend. The run was put on by James Varner of Rain Shadow Running. James always throws a good run and it was as much fun as last year except colder. Around mile 20, I mentioned that all I could think about was food and Kelly

Cedar River 50k

Stairs on Saturday with Kelly and then the Cedar River 50k yesterday. What a nice combo. The Cedar River Yours Truly 50k was, ummm, pretty flat. In fact, the most flat miles I’ve done in a run since the Rainier to Ruston 50m. Stands to reason since both use a lot of reclaimed railroad bed.
